Tell us about this Owl if you know. I found this bird sitting high up over a coconut tree inside a mango orchard near Barasat (North 24 parganas dist., West Bengal, India). It was huge as you can see. I zoomed from quite a distance. It flew immediately getting a hint of sound from my foot steps on dried leaves perhaps.

Seems to me like a Brown Fish Owl, a species widespread throughout the Indian subcontinent. Was it near some water body, as I presume? This being in Bengal, I'm guessing water is not too far away! You can get more details about the species on wikipedia, and google image search will show more pictures. Unfortunately, I don't have my most comprehensive bird books from India here with me, so I can't verify in any detail!

Thank you so much! I shall then check Wikipedia and elsewhere. Yes, there were couple of ponds near the mango garden (the coconut tree was inside this huge garden). It was basically a rural area where I have found this.
ReplyDeleteI used my camera, Canon S5 IS. It was late in the afternoon and I did not have tripod.
